Google introduces free AI app Gemini in place of Bard chatbot

We’ve been pleased to see the innovative results our customers have already achieved with pre-GA releases of Gen App Builder. For example, Orange France recently launched Orange Bot, a French-language generative AI-enabled chatbot. Embedded on their website, it uses the company’s support knowledge to independently generate precise and immediate responses to customer questions and serve as a conversational search engine and entry point to their “help and contact” website. The chatbot stems from a long-term business vision to transform the customer relationship, optimize management costs, and offer ever more helpful and user-friendly experiences. AI systems enhance their responses through extensive learning from human interactions, akin to brain synchrony during cooperative tasks. This process creates a form of “computational synchrony,” where AI evolves by accumulating and analyzing human interaction data.

The most powerful version of Gemini, Ultra, will be put inside Bard and made available through a cloud API in 2024. Google isn’t about to let Microsoft or anyone else make a swipe for its search crown without a fight. We continue to take a bold and responsible approach to bringing this technology to the world. “It’s our largest and most capable model; it’s also our most general,” Eli Collins, vice president of product for Google DeepMind, said at a press briefing announcing Gemini. Google’s own upcoming AI chatbot draws from the power of its search engine

On August 1, the company introduced several AI-powered features to Chrome, including enhanced Google Lens integration for visual searches, a tab comparison tool for online shopping, and improved history browsing capabilities. The addition of Gemini to the address bar represents a significant escalation of this AI-first approach. Future applications may include businesses using non-invasive BCIs, like Cogwear, Emotiv, or Muse, to communicate with AI design software or swarms of autonomous agents, achieving a level of synchrony once deemed science fiction. A vivid example has recently made headlines, with OpenAI expressing concern that people may become emotionally reliant on its new ChatGPT voice mode. Another example is deepfake scams that have defrauded ordinary consumers out of millions of dollars — even using AI-manipulated videos of the tech baron Elon Musk himself.

Google shows a message saying, “Bard may display inaccurate or offensive information that doesn’t represent Google’s views.” Unlike Bing’s AI Chat, Bard does not clearly cite the web pages it gets data from. Neuroscience offers valuable insights into biological intelligence that can inform AI development. For example, the brain’s oscillatory neural activity facilitates efficient communication between distant areas, utilizing rhythms like theta-gamma to transmit information. This can be likened to advanced data transmission systems, where certain brain waves highlight unexpected stimuli for optimal processing. Believe it or not, the short drama app market has taken off, much to Quibi’s dismay. Recent app store data shows that during the first quarter of 2024, 66 short drama apps (ReelShort, DramaBox, and more) achieved record revenue of $146 million in global consumer spending, per app intelligence firm Appfigures.

I explained an effort to sell a particular prospect a $30 subscription to a technology newsletter that would provide investment advice. I began with the prompt, “I’d like to formulate a plan to sell my subscription product to a prospective customer.” Prompt engineering has emerged as one of the important new tech skills in the age of generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI). More an art than a science, engineering a good prompt involves crafting the right requests to make a chatbot, such as ChatGPT or Google’s Gemini, do what you want. Despite those shortcomings, Gems have the value of bringing a user up to speed on the basics of prompt engineering. That capability is useful for a generalist audience unaware that prompt engineering exists. To test Gems, I copied the Brainstormer Gem and tried getting help with a sales plan for a subscription tech newsletter. I titled it “Sales coach”, and edited Google’s boilerplate code for Brainstorming, replacing the prompt text with my modifications. When you make a copy of any of these Gems, using the little “copy” icon, that copy action reveals all the instructions that Google has filled out for the Gem.

But despite its research successes, Google isn’t the company with the widely discussed AI chatbot today. In February 2024, Google paused Gemini’s image generation tool after people criticized it for spitting out historically inaccurate photos of US presidents. The company also restricted its AI chatbot from answering questions about the 2024 US presidential election to curb the spread of fake news and misinformation.

For these focused use cases, I suspect the Gem app could benefit from retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), an increasingly popular Gen AI technique, where the AI model taps into an external database. That approach might allow the Gem to get more resources for domain-specific sales knowledge. Gems may be available to some users of Google’s Gemini mobile app on Android, but not for all users. Gems don’t yet work at all on the iOS app for iPhone and iPad; Apple users will have to use Gemini on the Web. This is the second codelab in a series aimed at building a Buy Online Pickup In Store user journey. In many e-commerce journeys, a shopping cart is key to the success of converting users into paying customers.

Alexei Efros, a professor at UC Berkeley who specializes in the visual capabilities of AI, says Google’s general approach with Gemini appears promising. “Anything that is using other modalities is certainly a step in the right direction,” he says. With the new app, users can have more personalized conversations with the characters. Further down the line, they’ll even be able to create their own characters, which is Character.AI’s specialty. Since its launch in April, My Drama has rapidly gained traction, boasting 1 million users and $3 million in revenue. Holywater has a strong track record with its products, generating $90 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR) across all its offerings. The short drama app was developed by Holywater, a Ukraine-based media tech startup founded by Bogdan Nesvit (CEO) and Anatolii Kasianov (CTO).

According to an analysis by Swiss bank UBS, ChatGPT became the fastest-growing ‘app’ of all time. Other tech companies, including Google, saw this success and wanted a piece of the action. Yes, as of February 1, 2024, Gemini can generate images leveraging Imagen 2, Google’s most advanced text-to-image model, developed by Google DeepMind. All you have to do is ask Gemini to “draw,” “generate,” or “create” an image and include a description with as much — or as little — detail as is appropriate. Gemini has undergone several large language model (LLM) upgrades since it launched.

Switching back  to responses grounded in the website content, the assistant answers with interactive visual inputs to help the user assess how the condition of their current phone could influence trade-in value. These new capabilities are fully integrated with Dialogflow so customers can add them to their existing agents, mixing fully deterministic and generative capabilities. How Google Aims To Dominate Artificial Intelligence

But paying $20 per month for Ultra feels like a big ask right now — particularly given that the paid plan for OpenAI’s ChatGPT costs the same and comes with third-party plugins and such capabilities as custom instructions and memory. Ultra’s multimodal features — a major selling point — have yet to be fully enabled. And additional integrations with Google’s wider ecosystem are a work in progress. Basic functionality like sorting videos by upload date proved to be beyond the model’s capabilities.

In a few weeks, Google will put Gemini’s features into its existing search app for iPhones, where Apple would prefer people rely on its Siri voice assistant for handling various tasks. Chatbots have existed for years, so let’s start by walking through the below video to visualize how generative AI changes the game. With Conversational AI on Gen App Builder, organizations can orchestrate interactions, keeping users on task and productive while also enabling free-flowing conversation that lets them redirect the topic as needed. This much smaller model requires significantly less computing power, enabling us to scale to more users, allowing for more feedback. We’ll combine external feedback with our own internal testing to make sure Bard’s responses meet a high bar for quality, safety and groundedness in real-world information.

Whether it’s applying AI to radically transform our own products or making these powerful tools available to others, we’ll continue to be bold with innovation and responsible in our approach. And it’s just the beginning — more to come in all of these areas in the weeks and months ahead. Notably, Pichai did not announce plans to integrate Bard into the search box that powers Google’s profits. Instead he showcased a novel, and cautious, use of the underlying AI technology to enhance conventional search. For questions for which there is no single agreed-on answer, Google will synthesize a response that reflects the differing opinions. The model comes in three sizes that vary based on the amount of data used to train them. Gemini 1.5 Pro, Google’s most advanced model to date, is now available on Vertex AI, the company’s platform for developers to build machine learning software, according to the company.

When Google Bard first launched almost a year ago, it had some major flaws. Since then, it has grown significantly with two large language model (LLM) upgrades and several updates, and the new name might be a way to leave the past reputation in the past. Google renamed Google Bard to Gemini on February 8 as a nod to Google’s LLM that powers the AI chatbot.

You will have to sign in with a personal Google account (or a workspace account on a workspace where it’s been enabled) to use the experimental version of Bard.

OpenAI’s GPT-4, which currently powers the most capable version of ChatGPT, blew people’s socks off when it debuted in March of this year. It also prompted some researchers to revise their expectations of when AI would rival the broadness of human intelligence. OpenAI has described GPT-4 as multimodal and in September upgraded ChatGPT to process images and audio, but it has not said whether the core GPT-4 model was trained directly on more than just text. ChatGPT can also generate images with help from another OpenAI model called DALL-E 2. From today, Google’s Bard, a chatbot similar to ChatGPT, will be powered by Gemini Pro, a change the company says will make it capable of more advanced reasoning and planning. Today, a specialized version of Gemini Pro is being folded into a new version of AlphaCode, a “research product” generative tool for coding from Google DeepMind.

When comparing ChatGPT’s responses with Gemini’s, BI found that Google’s model had an edge at responding to queries regarding current events, identifying AI-generated images, and meal planning. ChatGPT, however, spat out more conversational responses, making interacting with the AI feel more enjoyable and human-like. Many Google Assistant voice features will be available through the Gemini app — including setting timers, making calls and controlling your smart home devices — and we’re working to support more in the future. The tech giant now allows Chrome users to access Gemini by simply typing “@gemini” followed by their query in the browser’s address bar. This seamless integration eliminates the need to navigate to a separate website or application to engage with AI assistance, effectively making artificial intelligence a default part of the browsing experience for Chrome’s vast user base. Instead, Google is pushing features like Gmail Q&A to convince users that the expensive monthly subscription costs for Gemini are worth it.

Once or twice in the blog post, you get a sense that Pichai is perhaps frustrated with OpenAI’s prominence. While never name checking OpenAI or ChatGPT directly, he links to Google’s Transformer research project, calling it “field-defining” and “the basis of many of the generative AI applications you’re starting to see today,” which is entirely true. The “T” in ChatGPT and GPT-3 stands for Transformer; both rely heavily on research published by Google’s AI teams.

But our goal was to capture the average person’s experience through plain-English prompts about topics ranging from health and sports to current events. Ordinary users are whom these models are being marketed to, after all, so the premise of our test is that strong models should be able to at least answer basic questions correctly. Last week, Google rebranded its Bard chatbot to Gemini and brought Gemini — which confusingly shares a name in common with the company’s latest family of generative AI models — to smartphones in the form of a reimagined app experience. Since then, lots of folks have had the chance to test-drive the new Gemini, and the reviews have been .

Ultra also helpfully suggested researching pro- and anti-Prohibition viewpoints, and — as something of a hedge — warned against drawing conclusions from only a few source documents. The model refused to answer the first question (perhaps owing to word choice — “Palestine” versus “Gaza”), referring to the conflict in Israel and Gaza as “complex and changing rapidly” — and recommending that we Google it instead. The Gemini app initially will be released in the U.S. in English before expanding to the Asia-Pacific region next week, with versions in Japanese and Korean. When you call up one of the Gems from the sidebar, you start typing to it at the prompt, just like with any chat experience. Gems are similar to other approaches that let a user of Gen AI craft a prompt and save the prompt for later use. For example, OpenAI offers its marketplace for GPTs developed by third parties. We think your contact center shouldn’t be a cost center but a revenue center.

Before launching Gemini Advanced, we conducted extensive trust and safety checks, including external red-teaming. We further refined the underlying model using fine-tuning and reinforcement learning, based on human feedback. In customer service, AI-driven chatbots and virtual assistants that interpret and respond to customer emotions with a very human-like voice, while improving the customer experience, might lead to reduced human interaction and undermine human agency. Google rolled out a major update to its Chrome browser on Tuesday, integrating its advanced Gemini AI chatbot directly into the address bar.

The company says it has done its most comprehensive safety testing to date with Gemini, because of the model’s more general capabilities. ChatGPT is built on top of GPT, an AI model known as a transformer first invented at Google that takes a string of text and predicts what comes next. OpenAI has gained prominence for publicly demonstrating how feeding huge amounts of data into transformer models and ramping up the computer power running them can produce systems adept at generating language or imagery. ChatGPT improves on GPT by having humans provide feedback to different answers to another AI model that fine-tunes the output. The situation may be particularly vexing to some of Google’s AI experts, because the company’s researchers developed some of the technology behind ChatGPT—a fact that Pichai alluded to in Google’s blog post. “Since then we’ve continued to make investments in AI across the board.” He name-checked both Google’s AI research division and work at DeepMind, the UK-based AI startup that Google acquired in 2014.
